  • In a pressure cooker, add toor daal and 2 cups water along with turmeric powder and salt and pressure cook.
  • When pressure releases, open lid and churn with hand beater to make of liquid consistency.
  • Soak tamarind in 1 cup warm water and take out the pulp by straining the solution through a sieve. Save the watery mixture of tamarind and discard the pulp which is left over in the sieve.
  • In a separate pan, heat oil. In this add onion, tomato, beans ,the watery mixture of tamarind and sambar powder.
  • Add this vegetable mixture to the daal mixture and cook together till the sambar is ready.
  • For tadka,in a separate pan heat oil. Add mustard seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and dried red chillies. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
  • Add this tadka to the daal mixture and the sambar is ready.

TIP: I always add a little bit of oil into the pressure cooker, so that it does not splatter contents out when it gives a whistle.
